Fine, in Monastery, you are a surviving hero has to attempt to navigate a dark and twisted world of plague, where everything will try to kill you. It isn’t the typical deckbuilding game you will encounter – the whole point of this game is to survive. Of course, you are dealing with bandits, monsters, and some of the most twisted landscapes amiable for a survival of which the gathered loot will only increase the likelihood of a victory. Let me tell you one thing though – once you are out of those gates – right here you are in the Monastery – complete madness.

Each area is filled with various kind of enemies and most of them attack from both the sides. So, like I said, yeah, it’s best if you had eyes in the back of your head. The weapons and equipment are chosen accurately as each of them has their description and, correspondingly, their card pools to focus on. And the bosses? Absolute nightmares. It’s continuously being constructed and reshaped, acquiring new cards, improvements, or abilities focused on exploiting an opponent’s flaws. The game is not shy of throwing some nuts straight out of the hat with dynamic enemies, tougher areas and with gears, one actually feels like s/he can come up with some custom strategies. Also, there is some permanent rewarding such as rings and trinkets that make you a huge advantage on the next runs.

Oh yes, and there’s art and music. The atmosphere of Monastery is rather gloomy and oppressive, which fits the game perfectly; and with the wide range of weapons and enemies and increasing of the difficulty level, it is almost impossible to get bored. It is as unyielding as it is strategic and there is no way you’re going to be able to quit before attempting to perfect it.
